CHILEAN POCKEMONS

Youths following a style known as Pokemon dance in a discotheque in Santiago. Pokemon, the popular Japanese series of cartoon characters whose name comes from the combination of the words "pocket" and "monster", is the most popular new wave among the Chilean youth, who dress and make up their hair accordingly and gather at afternoon reggaeton dance parties.

FRANCISCO MARTINEZ

Siempre es doloroso darnos cuenta de la fragilidad humana y sentir que golpes como el que hemos recibido esta semana respecto de la muerte de Francisco Martinez nos dejan impactados y especialmente a sus familiares y amigos con un dolor muy intenso.

He leido los comentarios de algunos de sus amigos y compañeros y creo que son ellos quien pueden dar mayor testimonio y describir a Pancho en plenitud.

En su ultima presentación en mi asignatura habló de un gimnasta que a pesar de las dificultades logra superar sus limitaciones y vuelve nuevamente a luchar. A pesar de lo poco que lo conocí, demostró un lado espiritual que poco conocía y se identificaba con la persona que el quería ser.

Professor Andrew Sheehan, who worked as an assessor for the Chilean ministry of education "Inglés Abre Puertas" program , gave a conference to our students of the teacher trainning program. the lecture was about the evolution of ELT in the last 25 years.

DEGREE EXAMS

This has been a very significant week for a group of students from the English teaching training program . The new examination system has been applied and fortunatelly all of them have sucessfully passed. Congratulations to all the new teachers!

HOW TO MAKE A GOOD ORAL PRESENTATION

Sooner or later, we all are called upon to get up in front of a class and speak. The following tips are designed to make public speaking less stressful.

- Be prepared. Know your subject. If possible, make up cards with notes or key phrases to refer to during your speech. Do not put the entire speech on the cards and read it word for word. You will look stiff, sound uninteresting and bore your audience.

- Use an Effective Introduction: avoid weak introductions such as apologies.

- If you can choose the topic you are to speak on yourself, opt for something you enjoy . Show your passion for the subject.

- Sound spontaneous, conversational, enthusiastic- use key phrases in your notes so you don't have to read.

- Use Body Language Effectively: relaxed gestures, eye contact; don't play with a pen or pointer and don't block visual aids.

- Practice. Do several run-throughs of your talk. Gather any props you will use, such as images or charts. You might even get a classmate or a friend to observe your rehearsal and give you constructive feedback.

- Stage fright (panico escenico ). Once you begin your talk and warm to your subject, the stage fright usually goes away.

These tips can help assure that giving a speech or a presentation will be as pleasant for you as it is for your audience. Good luck!

A FRIEND AT UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA

Professor McNamee from Eastern Oregon University is visiting us again. This time he is working with the master degree program students for only 3 weeks . Gerry came to Chile first time in 2004 ( 2 weeks) and in 2005 all the first semester. I've talked to Gerry about the possibility of visiting some of our students and he would be very pleased in doing so.
